Occurrence Type: Phone Scams

Details:

Between the 7 and 10 March 2016 the WGPS has taken reports for 3 separate “phone scam” frauds.

The first incident concerned a victim that is out approximately $500 after having made a purchase online in the States. There were a number of follow up calls advising the victim that before their purchase could be released they now had to buy approximately $500 worth of insurance. Unfortunately the victim had been dealing with a fictitous company.

The second incident concerned a Canadian Revenue Agency scam wherein the victim was told to contact a number to pay taxes owed, followed by a request for personal information such as date of birth and SIN number.

The third incident involved a lottery/prize scam asking for the potential victim to send money to retrieve their winnings.

Fortunately the second and third incidents resulted in the potential victims contacting police for advice prior to sending money or providing personal information.

Fraudulent “scams” of all types and in particular phone related “scams” like those noted above have been covered by local and National media. The aforementioned scams are common.
