Two Speeders Caught Going Over 150

(Ottawa, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), OPP Highway Safety Division have charged two drivers, traveling in excess of 150 Kilometers per hour on Highway 416.

On August 7, 2015, at approximately 9:22 am, an officer observed a motor vehicle on Highway 416 northbound by Dilworth Road, traveling in excess of 150 kph. The officer subsequently stopped the vehicle, which was seized for 7 days. The driver’s licence was also suspended for 7 days.

A 23 year old male driver, from Merrickville was been charged with:

Race a motor vehicle contrary to section 172(1) of The Highway Traffic Act.

On August 12, 2015, at approximately 2:49 pm, an officer observed a motor vehicle on Highway 416 southbound by Dilworth Road, traveling in excess of 150 kph. The officer subsequently stopped the vehicle, which was seized for 7 days. The driver’s licence was also suspended for 7 days.

A 65 year old male driver, from Richmond Hill was been charged with:

Race a motor vehicle contrary to section 172(1) of The Highway Traffic Act.

What are the penalties for driving 50 kph. over the speed limit?

Pre-conviction – Immediate 7-day licence suspension and 7-day vehicle Impoundment;

Upon conviction – $2,000 to $10,000 fine, 6 demerit points, up to 6 months jail, up to 2 years licence suspension for a first conviction; and

Second offence – Driver licence suspension up to 10 years within 10 years of first conviction.

The following demerit point penalties apply to drivers convicted of a speed-related offence. Remember, if you collect enough demerit points, you can lose your driver’s licence:

3 points for exceeding the speed limit by 16 to 29 km/h;

4 points for exceeding the speed limit by 30 to 49 km/h; and

6 points for exceeding the speed limit by 50 km/h or more.
