(MARATHON ON.) -On Thursday November 27th, 2014 at approximately 5:40pm, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marathon detachment observed a motor vehicle approaching Highway 17 from Deadhorse Rd.
A traffic stop of the vehicle was conducted resulting in the driver of the vehicle, Geofrey SMELT age 52, of Marathon being arrested and charged with Driving a Motor Vehicle While Ability by Alcohol, Drive Motor Vehicle with more than 80mgs of Alcohol in Blood and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
As a result of a RIDE program vehicle stop in Marathon on the 28th of November at approximately 2:07am Tyrone Hancock age 27, of Marathon was arrested and charged with Driving a Motor Vehicle While Ability by Alcohol, Drive Motor Vehicle with more than 80mgs of Alcohol in Blood and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Both were released on a Promise to Appear to respond to the charges in court on the 22nd of January 2015, in Marathon.
As a reminder to everyone – Drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08, or who fail to comply with breath testing, face an immediate seven-day vehicle impoundment at roadside.
Impaired driving, which means driving while your ability is affected by alcohol or drugs, is a crime under the Criminal Code of Canada. If convicted, you can lose your licence, be fined, or spend time in jail. Your vehicle does not even have to be moving; you can be charged if you are impaired behind the wheel, even if you have not started to drive.
