(COBOURG, ON) – At 2:40pm yesterday, Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a collision on Highway 401 near County Road 45 involving a large commercial truck and two vehicles.
Debris from the collision required the closure of one westbound lane and one eastbound lane between Burnham Street and County Road 45 until 6:00 pm to allow for the removal of the damaged vehicles.
Witnesses advised police that a SUV entered the highway westbound from County Road 45, lost control and struck a large truck towing a crane (commonly known as a ‘cherry picker’). The truck jack-knifed causing the cherry picker to break free, strike the centre median and roll over onto the eastbound lanes losing one tire in the process. That tire struck an eastbound car.
The drivers of the SUV and small car were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The 17 year old driver of the SUV from Port Hope has been charged with Careless Driving.
Northumberland OPP responded to 13 collisions yesterday.
Detachment Commander, A/Inspector Rob Kobayashi ….’Motorists need to ensure that their full attention is on driving. When a trailered device comes off a trailer and falls on the roadway there is very little time to react. We are very fortunate that no one was seriously injured’.
