Toonies For Torches

(BRUCE PENINSULA, ON.) During the month of May, Wiarton Foodland and Fretz’s Valu-Mart in Sauble Beach teamed up with the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics and sold a total of 1,978 paper torches to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics. The event is an initiative of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics to help alleviate some of the costs involved with this worthy cause. All of the funds raised go to help athletes in our community with training and attendance for regional and provincial games.

For approximately five years both the Wiarton and Sauble Beach grocery stores have partnered with the Bruce Peninsula OPP to run this event. Over the past 5 years, Fretz’s Valu-Mart (Sauble Beach) has outsold Wiarton Foodland. This year, thanks to some friendly competition, Wiarton sold more than Sauble Beach. Wiarton sold 1511 torches for $3022; the total collected by both stores was just under $4000. The top sellers were Sarah Plane from Fretz’s Valu-Mart and Bev Cole from Wiarton Foodland.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics would like to thank Wiarton Foodland and Fretz’s Valu-Mart for their continued support and for the efforts of each employee in helping with the cause.
