(THUNDER BAY, ON) On Tuesday, December 10 2013 at approximately 08:23 am, officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a three vehicle collision on Highway 11/17 between John Street and Oliver Road.
The driver of a south bound Kia Sorento lost control of the vehicle, crossed the centre line into the north bound lane and collided with a north bound Jeep Liberty. The Kia Sorento entered the north bound ditch after colliding with the Jeep Liberty.
A north bound Western Star tractor trailer unit; (cab only, no trailer) was unable to avoid the collision and struck the Jeep Liberty.
A 54 year old female passenger and a 2 year old male passenger of the Jeep Liberty, both from Thunder Bay, were transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. The male driver was not injured.
The male driver of the Western Star and female driver of the Kia Sorento were not injured.
Both the Kia Sorento and Jeep Liberty sustained extensive damage. The Western Star did not sustain any damage.
Also this morning, officers responded to two separate incidents of vehicles that went into the ditch due to icy road conditions. As well, a Chevrolet truck lost control and struck a light pole on Highway 61 between the Harbour Expressway and Arthur Street. There were no injuries reported in these incidents.
OPP would like to remind motorists that during the early morning commute, the pavement on highways and roadways may appear to be dry and bare when in actuality the roads are frost covered and icy in some sections due to the extreme cold temperatures that we have been experiencing in the Thunder Bay area.
