This Week In Russell County

(RUSSELL COUNTY, ON) – The Russell County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating several incidents after responding to 234 calls for service from Sunday November 22th to Saturday November 28th. Among these occurrences, OPP responded to 15 false alarm, 15 9-1-1 calls dialed in error, 21 motor vehicle collisions, 10 domestic disputes, and seven mischiefs. As a result of those occurrences, three males and three females were charged with various criminal offences.

Domestic Assault

On the 28th of November OPP Provincial Constable Karim DAVIS responded to a report of a family dispute in the township of The Nation. Investigation indicated that an altercation had occurred between an adult male and an adult female resulting in the female assaulting the male. It was determined that during the evening the intoxicated female had struck the male on two occasions with her hand, and on a third occasion with a back scratcher. An adult female (52) from the township of The Nation was arrested and is charged with two counts of Assault – Spousal contrary to Section 266, and one count of Assault with a weapon contrary to Section 267(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada. The female was released on a Promise to Appear and an Undertaking with a court date of December 16th, 2015 in L’Orignal. The name of the accused person is being withheld in order to protect the identity of the victim.

Traffic violation

On the 28th of November OPP Provincial Constable Mike CUNNING was conducting traffic enforcement on the 417 highway in the Russell Township. The officer observed a blue BMW travelling at a high rate of speed and determined the speed to be 195km/hr in a posted 100km/hr zone. The male driver, Hamad KHAN, age 24 of Montreal was charged for Race a Motor Vehicle contrary to Section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act. His driver’s licence was suspended for seven days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days as a result of the stunt driving charge. The driver is scheduled to appear at the L’Orignal court on the 7th January 2016.

Police remind motorists that an essential part of the enforcement job is to save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways. Educating the public about safe driving practices is a priority.

Alcohol related incident

On the 27th of November OPP Provincial Constable Karim DAVIS responded to a complaint from the public regarding a possible impaired driver in the town of Embrun. The vehicle was pulled over and the driver appeared to be intoxicated. The driver was arrested for driving while impaired by alcohol. Following a breath tests at the detachment, Alexander HAYWARD, age 53 of the Montague Township was charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle contrary to Section 253(1)(a) and with Operate a Motor Vehicle with more than 80 mgs/alcohol in 100 ml/blood contrary to Section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada. He was released on a promise to appear in court in L’Orignal on December 16th 2015.

Any driver charged with excess blood alcohol is also subject to an automatic 90 day driver’s license suspension and their vehicle will be impounded for 7 days.
