(MIDDLESEX COUNTY, ON) – Mother Nature has struck again and Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is urging drivers to go slow on the snow covered roads.
Both Highways 401 and 402 surrounding the London area are slick in sections, and drivers are asked to take extra caution, especially on the ramps exiting the major highways. “When exiting the highway, make sure exit in a gradual, smooth fashion. Drivers tend to find themselves in trouble when they make sudden and exaggerated changes in direction and speed. Plan your exit well in advance and get yourself to the proper lane a few kilometers behind. Instead of slamming on your brakes, take your foot off the accelerator. If you didn’t give yourself enough time to make a gradual exit, simply take the next exit. It might mean an extra 10-15 minutes to your drive but at least you will get to your destination safely†advises Provincial Constable Laurie Houghton.
Most importantly this New Year’s Eve, police stress the importance of being sober. Any amount of alcohol can impair one’s ability to drive and drivers need to be able to focus on their driving especially when facing varying weather conditions. “There are so many options to find your way home tonight. There is no excuse to drink and drive. It is especially difficult on our officers having to discuss New Year’s funeral plans with a family because someone chose to drink and get behind the wheel of the car. It’s sad and it’s tragic because it’s preventable†says Constable Houghton.
Middlesex County OPP will be conducting RIDE programs throughout the County, educating the public and ensuring a safe journey into the New Year.
