North Huron is facing a $2,529,000/year infrastructure deficit according to their Asset Management Plan. That is why our roads aren’t being fixed, why there is still lead pipe in the water system, and our infrastructure is literally collapsing beneath us. The Public Works Department has blown all their money over the years, and never put any way in reserves to fix and/or replace our aging infrastructure. The head of Public Works and Council have failed on such a massive scale, many Citizens believe a criminal investigation should be initiated.
To address this $2.5 million dollar shortfall, an immediate 53% jump in taxes is necessary. This would put our Residential tax rate at 3%, and taxes on a $235,000 home would be over $7,000/year. Even if this happens in 2016, it will take many years before North Huron can start to fix itself.
Town staff have already admitted Industrial and Commercial real estate values have dropped. Whether this Public Works deficit is going to be addressed or not, it will have a negative effect on Residential real estate values as it can’t be ignored forever.
