Students get crash course on the risks of impaired and distracted driving

(Ottawa) – Local Optimist Clubs will team up with Ottawa Fire Services, Ottawa Paramedic Service and the Ottawa Police Service for the Toe Tag event on May 27th – and re-enact a motor vehicle collision to raise awareness among high school students about the consequences of impaired or distracted driving.

The re-enactment, open to media, will kick off prom season and will be witnessed by approximately 120 students and staff from École secondaire publique Louis-Riel.

The Toe Tag event is held in partnership with the Club Optimiste Blackburn Hamlet, Club Optimiste Kanata, Club Optimiste Vanier, Club Optimiste de Beacon Hill and the City’s Safer Roads Ottawa Program and involves a simulated crash scene where actors are rescued, treated and arrested by members of the Ottawa Fire Services, Ottawa Paramedic Service and Ottawa Police Service.

This initiative supports the Safer Roads Ottawa Program which is a leading community partnership between Ottawa Fire Services, Ottawa Paramedic Service, Ottawa Police Service, Ottawa Public Health and the Public Works Department who are committed to preventing or eliminating road deaths and serious injuries for all people in the City of Ottawa, through culture change, community engagement, and development of a sustainable safe transportation environment.
