Spike Belt Used To Stop RIDE Check Avoider

(COUNTY OF BRANT, ON) – The County of Brant Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), officers were conducting a RIDE check on Colborne Street East. The officers observed a vehicle attempt to avoid the RIDE check.

At approximately 8:57 p.m. Tuesday December 31st, 2013, officers were conducting a RIDE check and observed a vehicle turn around in a driveway on Colborne Street East. An officer stopped the vehicle on Colborne Street East and while the officer was checking the identity of the driver, the vehicle sped away into the City of Brantford. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle but a collision occurred between the suspect vehicle and a police vehicle. The suspect vehicle and driver continued to attempt to evade police. The vehicle was disabled by the use of a spike belt on County of Brant Highway 54. With the assistance of Six Nations Police and Haldimand County OPP two young male occupants were apprehended.

A 17 year old male from the City of Brantford facing the following Criminal charges (as a Young Person)

Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle
Theft Under $5,000.00
Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5,000.00
Assault Peace Officer with a weapon
Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
Possession of Schedule II substance- Cannabis Marihuana under 30 grams

The accused is scheduled to attend Provincial Court in Brantford on January 29th, 2014 to answer to the charges.
