(UTTERSON, ON) On Sunday December 28, 2014 just before 5:00pm Huntsville Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with Muskoka EMS and Huntsville fire department were advised of a snowmobile with one male riding it had gone through the ice on Long Lake. Long Lake is located just west of the village of Utterson, Ontario. The male managed to get himself to shore, and did not report to have any injuries.
With the recent cold weather lakes are beginning to freeze in the Huntsville area. Huntsville OPP would like to remind everyone to check ice conditions before venturing out. It is a reminder to wear appropriate clothing and equipment for safety. The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) website lists guidelines on how to determine when ice is safer. For example there needs to be at least 20 centimetres or 8 inches of clear blue ice before it is safe to snowmobile on the lake. Refer to their website https://www.ontario.ca/environment-and-energy/ice-fishing for more information on ice safety tips.
