Senior Citizen Scammed Out Of $12,000

(TOWNSHIP OF MAPLETON, ON) – On March 15, 2017 Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call to attend 23 Main street east, Township of Mapleton, for a potential fraud. Employees at the Drayton Branch of the RBC Royal Bank became suspicious and contact OPP when a senior citizen came into the bank attempting to transfer around $20,000 to pay a tax on a winning lottery prize.

OPP attended and spoke with staff and the senior. It was discovered that over $12,000 had already been defrauded and transferred to unknown suspects.

The victim was told that a prize of 3.5 million dollars and an exotic car were won. Months of grooming convinced the victim that it was necessary to send money to avoid being defrauded.

If you received correspondence requesting upfront payments on winnings or rewards such as this, and are questioning the legitimacy please contact your local police service and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1888-495-8501 or http://www.antifraudcentre.ca.
