Seatbelts, It’s The Law

(WEST PARRY SOUND, ON) – Every person in a motor vehicle on a Highway shall occupy a seating position for which a seat belt assembly has been provided. In Ontario, it has been the law to wear a seatbelt when travelling in a motor vehicle on a Highway since January 1, 1979. Using a seat belt is the single most effective way to reduce the chance of injury or death in a motor vehicle collision.

This past Civic Holiday Weekend, the West Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) laid 7 Provincial Offence Notices related to seat belts; 6 Driver Fail to Properly Wear Seat Belt and 1 Passenger Fail to Properly Wear Seat Belt, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. Drivers and passenger face a total fine of $240.

On July 19, 2013 the OPP was conducting R.I.D.E. on Hwy 529 in Sturgeon Bay Provincial Park. A vehicle came to a stop and the car seat in the back was observed becoming vertical as it was not tethered to the bucket seat. The driver was charged with Fail to Ensure Toddler Properly Secured, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act, a $240 fine. The car seat was properly secured prior to leaving the R.I.D.E. stop location.
