(CAMPBELLFORD, ON) –On October 14, 2015 at 10:36pm Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to complaints of an erratic driver on Grand Road. Witnesses reported liquor bottles being thrown from the vehicle which jumped a curb when exiting a parking lot. Officers located the silver Audi A4 on Front Street South and determined the driver had been drinking. After a roadside test, the driver was arrested and taken for further tests at the Campbellford detachment.
As a result of these tests, Sarah COX age 19 of Aurora, Ontario is charged with Care & Control of a motor vehicle while her blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg in 100ml of blood and Young Driver – Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) above zero. She was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brighton on November 3, 2015.
‘If you are 21 years of age and under and hold a full-class driver’s licence, you must not drive if you have been drinking alcohol. Your blood-alcohol level must be zero. If you are caught driving with alcohol in your blood, you will receive an immediate driver’s licence suspension at the roadside for 24 hours and, if convicted, you will face a fine of up to $500 and a 30-day licence suspension.’
‘Drivers of all ages in either Level One or Level Two of Ontario’s graduated-licensing system must also have a blood-alcohol level of zero when driving. New drivers caught drinking and driving will receive an immediate driver’s licence suspension at the roadside for 24 hours and, if convicted, will face a fine of up to $500 and will receive a suspension period as per the Novice Driver Escalating Sanctions scheme. For the first occurrence, you will be suspended for 30 days. For the second occurrence, in a five-year period, you be suspended for 90 days. For the third occurrence in a five-year period, the novice portion of your driver’s licence will be cancelled, and you must reapply for a G1 licence.’
‘Novice drivers will also be charged under the Criminal Code if their BAC exceeds .08 and will be issued a warn-range suspension if they register a BAC from .05 to .08.’
