Retirement Home Evacuated

(MUNICIPALITY OF NORTH PERTH, ON) On Thursday March 15, 2012 shortly after 10 a.m. the Municipality of North Perth Fire Dept. and Perth County OPP officers responded to an alarm at the “Hamilton Place” retirement home in Listowel.

The retirement facility located at 469 Main St. West was evacuated when smoke was detected in the building. All residents of the home were successfully assisted and directed outside while the fire department searched for the cause of the smoke inside the home. Main St. West was closed from 10:15 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. to ensure the safety of the residents, many bystanders and emergency personnel.

The cause of the smoke was deemed not suspicious in nature and was a result of a short in an electrical cooking appliance. After extensive ventilating of the building, residents were allowed to re-enter the home.
