Repeat Offender Charged After Confining And Threatening Taxi Driver

At approximately 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 22nd an Owen Sound cab driver picked up an intoxicated male in the downtown core, tasked with returning the fare to his Owen Sound residence. A short time later the cab company’s dispatcher, who was unable to get a response from the taxi driver, contacted police to assist with checking on the driver’s well-being. Police located the unattended taxi, and followed the sound of voices to the offence location a short distance away, where they affected an arrest.

Police learned that while en route to the fare’s home, the cab driver was ordered to pull into the driveway of a residence on 8th Avenue West, in spite of the man being under conditions of probation not to attend that residence. Once there, the fare ordered the driver out of the cab, demanding he accompany the fare into a rear yard, threatening to assault the cab driver if he did not comply. The driver was pushed and confined within the rear yard. The cabbie was also intimidated to returning the cash payment. The offender made several unsuccessful attempts to gain entry into the home, causing minor damage to a window.

The 24-year old male is detained for a bail hearing later this morning, and is charged with:

Assault

Uttering threats

Intimidation

Forcible confinement

Mischief under $5000

Prowl by night

Breach of probation (8 counts)
