(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment received a report of an attempt theft of a motor vehicle at an Alice Street, Waterford, Norfolk County, Ontario address.
On Sunday, October 19, 2014 between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., unknowns proceeded to enter a locked sports utility vehicle (SUV) that was parked on the roadway outside of Waterford T.V. and Appliance by damaging the driver’s side door lock. Once inside, unknowns then damaged the steering column in an attempt to remove the vehicle however their attempt was not successful.
The OPP is reminding all residents to ensure that your vehicle is locked at all times and valuables are removed. You can greatly reduce the risk of theft by following these common-sense strategies:
Use an anti-theft device such as an electronic engine immobilizer or vehicle alarm.
Park in well-lit areas, near pedestrian traffic.
Remove possessions from your vehicle – shopping bags, spare change, electronics, brief cases, etc.
Always lock your vehicle.
Do not keep spare keys to your vehicle in the vehicle. Remove valet keys.
Keep your garage door opener out of sight. If parking on the street outside your residence, take the garage door opener with you.
If you see suspicious persons or vehicles, try to obtain as much detail as you can, write down the person(s) description, the type of vehicle they are driving and the licence plate number and contact police.
