(ALMGUIN HIGHLANDS, ON) In Ontario every occupant travelling in a motor vehicle is required by law to wear a seatbelt. The Ontario Provincial Police are currently conducting a seat belt campaign and are specifically looking for vehicle occupants not wearing their seatbelts. The campaign runs from September 26, 2013 until October 13, 2013.
Facts:
·Every 11 hours someone in Ontario is killed or injured in a motor vehicle collision who wasn’t wearing their seatbelt.
· Occupants in motor vehicle collisions are on average about 30 times more likely to be killed if they are not wearing their seatbelt.
Drivers are responsible for all passengers under 16 years to ensure they are properly secured in a seatbelt and there can only be one person using a seatbelt at a time.
Drivers and passengers over 16 years failing to use or improperly use a seatbelt are subject to a fine of $240 and for drivers this would include 2 demerit points.
Currently the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police have issued 11 Provincial Offence Notices to drivers/passenger for failing to wear a seatbelt.
