(HALIBURTON, ON) – On April 07, 2014 at approximately 1:45 pm officers from the Haliburton Highlands Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), responded to an incident involving a plane in Dorset, Ontario. OPP were advised that a small private aircraft was taxiing in on Little Trading Bay just east of the village of Dorset when it broke through the ice. The male pilot managed to escape from the 1977 Citabria single engine plane and was treading water when he was rescued. Donald SHORTREED, 80 years of age from the Township of Algonquin Highlands was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries and for treatment of hypothermia. The incident is currently under investigation by the OPP and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
