(COCHRANE, ON)-Traffic safety is a shared responsibility and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding motorists to help keep our children safe by obeying parking bylaws in Cochrane school areas. It is important that motorists maintain an acute sense of awareness and expect the unexpected when driving near schools and in neighbourhoods where school buses and school children are present.
With the growing concern of traffic and pedestrian congestion immediately before and after school hours, the Town of Cochrane has recently erected a “No Parking†sign situated along Chalmers Avenue’s southbound lane, directly in front of the Cochrane Public and Ecole Secondaire High School.
In light of this change, the OPP reminds all motorists to park along the northbound lane shoulder of Chalmers Avenue and in the prescribed parking lots, in an effort to prevent bottlenecking of the roadway and improving the visibility of pedestrians and motorists.
“Ensuring the safety of students who walk to and from school and assisting with the safe and orderly flow of traffic near our schools is paramount. Parking enforcement contributes to the overall safety and security of the people of Cochrane by focusing on traffic safety priorities. This is achieved through various strategies including enforcement, visibility and public awareness.†said James Bay Detachments Operations Manager Staff Sergeant Mike Pilon.
The OPP will be diligent in ensuring drivers are following all rules and laws in its effort to maintain the safety of our children and roadways.
