OPP SEARCH FOR MISSING CANOEIST

(FORT FRANCES, ON) – On June 27, 2014 at 6:15 pm, officers of the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to investigate a marine incident in Quetico Provincial Park.

OPP investigation revealed four adult males had been travelling in two canoes through Quetico Park in the area of Pickerel Lake. As the party paddled across the lake, one of the males, a 24 year old Oliver-Paipoonge man went into medical distress and fell out of his canoe near Lookout Island. The canoeists immediately searched the area but were unable to locate the man. An emergency call was placed to family who then notified police. The male was not wearing a life jacket.

OPP and Quetico Provincial Park officials responded and conducted marine patrol with negative results. OPP Underwater Search and Recovery were requested and arrived on scene on June 29, 2014.
