OPP RESPOND TO SEVERAL COLLISIONS

(CHATHAM-KENT, ON) Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were kept very busy January 16, 2014 starting just after 3:00 p.m., until just before 2:00 a.m. on January 17, 2014, responding to as many as 13 motor vehicle collisions along Highway 401 between Queens Line and Duart Road. Two of the collisions investigated involved charges.

One occurred just after 6:00 p.m., on January 16, 2014, when Chatham-Kent OPP officers responded to a single motor vehicle collision involving a Ford vehicle traveling westbound on Highway 401 near Mull Road. The vehicle lost control and came to rest in the centre median. As a result of the subsequent OPP traffic investigation, it was revealed that a child passenger in the vehicle was not properly secured. The driver, 27 year old Samar ABBOUD, from Windsor, has been charged with Fail To Ensure Child Properly Secured, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

The second incident occurred just after 8:00 p.m., on January 16, 2014, when Chatham-Kent OPP officers responded to a report of a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 401 near Communication Road. The collision occurred when a Ford vehicle traveling westbound lost control, struck a post and came to rest in the north ditch. The 29 year old driver, Mohamad MAKKAWI, from Windsor, has been charged with Careless Driving, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

No injuries were reported in any of the collisions that were investigated by Chatham-Kent OPP.

These collisions are preventable. Conditions are slippery in the area and Chatham-Kent OPP would like to caution drivers to slow down and leave lots of extra space between you and other vehicles. Adjust your speed to match the road conditions.

We ask the public to be cautious as Emergency crews are currently working at removing vehicles from the ditch along the highway throughout the day.
