(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Norfolk County Detachment responded to an incident at a Beach Lane, Long Point, Norfolk County, Ontario, address.
On Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at approximately 3:19 p.m., members of the Norfolk County OPP, Norfolk County Paramedics and Norfolk County Fire Services responded to the Long Point Beach located off Beach Lane for a report of male that became in distress when attempting to leave the water from Lake Erie.
Police have determined that a 17 year old male from Brantford, Ontario, was swimming in the water with five other friends when they attempted to make their way back to shore due to high waves and strong current. As the group were making their way back to shore the male became in distress and disappeared under the water.
Witnesses observed the male approximately three minutes later face down in the water unconscious. He was pulled from the water and two off duty nurses immediately began cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
The male was subsequently transported to a local area hospital by Paramedics for further treatment.
“We are urging all Ontarians to take personal responsibility for ensuring water safety for themselves and their children which include basic safety practices such as learning to swim at an early age; wearing a lifejacket or a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) while on a vessel or swimming. Young children or non-swimmers should always wear a PFD while in the water in case they become in distress. This can make the difference between surviving, or not,†comments Constable Ed Sanchuk, Norfolk County OPP.
