(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment responded to an incident after being contacted by a concerned citizen at a Concession 8, South Walsingham, Norfolk County, Ontario address.
On Monday, October 21, 2013 at approximately 8:55 a.m., police responded to an address after being contacted by a concerned citizen that located military ordnances.
Through investigation it was determined that the residents were in the process of cleaning out a garage when they discovered two military ordnances.
The OPP contacted the Explosives Ordnance Disposal Unit (EODU) from the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden. Members from the Canadian Forces National Defence attended and safely secured the items.
The OPP want to remind everyone about their safety if they should locate any type of military ordnances. A major problem with unexploded ordnances, is that over the years the detonator and main charge deteriorate, frequently making them more sensitive to disturbance, and therefore more dangerous to handle.
If military ordnances are located, they should not be touched or handled by unqualified persons. The location should be reported to your local police service immediately so that an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit (EODU) professional can render it safe.
