Throughout this week Central Hastings O.P.P visited schools in Madoc, Madoc Township, Marmora and Tweed to review bicycle safety rules with Grade 3 students. Discussion focused on equipment that is required by law such as helmet, bell or horn, lights and reflective tape as well was safe biking practices on the roadway.
Students were reminded of the “ABC” safety check to ensure their bicycle tires are full with Air and that their Brakes and Chain are functioning properly.
Students were advised of the #1 safety rule of biking – Always Wear a Helmet! They were shown the “2-4-1 Helmet Salute” to ensure their helmet fits right:
· The edge of the helmet should be two fingers above the eyebrows to protect the forehead
· Straps should meet in a V shape just below the ears
· One finger should fit between the chin and the chin strap (it should not shift around more than an inch in any direction)
Thanks to the generous support of Central Hastings Community Policing Advisory Committee (CPAC), all participating Grade 3 students received a brand new bicycle helmet.
Central Hastings OPP also expresses appreciation to Madoc Home Hardware Owner JoAnn Bacon who orders the stylish helmets each year.
