(COCHRANE, ON) -A Cochrane man has been stripped of his driving privileges and vehicle after being observed traveling at excessive speeds in Cochrane, Ontario.
On March 5, shortly before 4:00 pm, an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer from the Cochrane detachment observed a north bound 2010 blue Mazda passenger vehicle travelling at a speed of 139 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone on Hwy 579 in the town of Cochrane, after it was observed overtaking a north bound school bus.
During the traffic stop, further police investigation resulted in the seizure of a small amount of Cannabis Marihuana and Cocaine.
The 24 year old male driver from Cochrane, Ontario, has been charged with one count of Stunt driving-speeding in excess of 50 km/h of the posted speed limit, contrary to section 172(1) of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act and two counts of Drug possession, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act.
In addition, the driver’s vehicle has been impounded to prevent further continuation of driving offences and his driver’s licence has been suspended for seven days.
The accused has been scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice and Provincial Offences Court in mid-May, 2014 to answer to the charges laid against him.
The OPP would like to remind all motorists that roadway safety is everyone’s responsibility and that officers will remain vigilant in educating non-compliant drivers through enforcement measures.
