(SMITHS FALLS, ON) Since December 2012, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) across East Region have been investigating numerous frauds in relation to credit cards being used to order construction material.
Suspects phone in an order using a fraudulent credit card for payment. At times, the suspects hire a company to pick-up the order shortly after making the phone call. When the credit card is used, it appears to be valid, but is soon returned to the company as stolen or compromised. Unfortunately, the material is already gone.
The OPP reminds companies to be diligent in ensuring that credit cards are used properly. Do not provide materials unless the actual credit card is presented for payment and if in doubt, request a secondary piece of identification. Businesses may also call the credit card companies to ensure the card is valid.
If anyone has information about these frauds, they are asked to contact their local OPP detachment at 1-888-310-1122 or their nearest police agency.
