OPP INVESTIGATE THEFTS FROM COMMUNITY MAILBOXES

(WELLINGTON COUNTY, ON) -Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has received numerous reports in Centre Wellington Township and Guelph-Eramosa Township about Canada Post Community Mailboxes being forced open. The incidents have occurred between the dates of February 14 to February 18 and it is unknown if any mail has been stolen. It is believed that unknown suspect(s) are attempting to find information for identity theft, cheques or credit cards. Residents that receive their mail through the community mailboxes should report any suspicious person(s) to police and consider these tips from Canada Post;

Collect your mail promptly after delivery.
If you’ll be away, let the post office hold your mail until you return.
When you move provide a change of address
If your bills fail to arrive, contact companies immediately
Shred documents that contain personal financial information, such as statements and credit card offers.
Never send cash in the mail.
Deposit your mail close to the scheduled pickup time posted on the mailbox.
Deposit mail items containing sensitive or financial information, or large quantities of mail at your local Post Office.
