(SMOOTH ROCK FALLS, ON)-During the early morning hours of August 17, 2014, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers from the Smooth Rock Falls detachment observed a fluorescent orange Chevrolet pickup truck start from a stopped position and conduct a 360 degree tire burnout before travelling Westbound at a high rate of speed down a residential street in Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario.
Police followed the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on Sixth Street where they detected a strong odour of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the breath of the involved driver. During the conversation with police, the driver ran into a nearby residence freshly pursued by the investigating officers. The driver was subsequently apprehended and advised to accompany the officers to the police vehicle to provide a suitable breath sample in an approved roadside screening device.
Results of the sample prompted police to place the 30 year old driver Marc MAILLE, of Hwy 11 in O’Brien Township under arrest and initiate the impoundment of his vehicle before transporting him to the Cochrane OPP detachment for further testing.
Based on the totality of the investigation, the accused was charged with one count of Driving with more than 80 mgs. of alcohol in blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada and one count of Race a motor vehicle, contrary to section 172(1) of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act
The accused was subsequently released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in Smooth Rock Falls on October 3, 2014 to answer to his charges.
