(THUNDER BAY, ON) Officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were kept busy this past weekend with a number of incidents.
On Friday September 20 2013 at approximately 10:20 pm, officers responded to a collision involving two vehicles and a moose on Highway 61 just north of the Pigeon River border. The driver of a Ford truck struck and killed a moose. As a result of that collision, the driver of a Chevrolet Impala drove over the moose while it was lying on the highway. The 89 year old male driver of the Impala was transported to hospital with non life threatening injuries.
On Saturday September 21 at approximately 12:00 am, officers responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 61 near Chippewa Road. A Ford truck struck a south bound Jeep causing the driver of the Jeep to roll the vehicle several times and land in the ditch. The driver of the Ford truck fled the scene. The driver of the Jeep was transported to hospital with non life threatening injuries. The investigation is continuing.
Stolen Vehicle in Shuniah
On Saturday September 21 at 3:15 am, officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle, a 2013 Ford truck. The truck was reported stolen from a residence in the Municipality of Shuniah. Upon patrolling the area, officers located the truck, undamaged, at the Silver Harbour Conservation area. Several items inside the vehicle including a cell phone, camera and wallet were stolen. No suspects were located at the scene. The investigation is continuing.
Break and Enters in Shuniah
On Saturday September 21, a number of residents in the Municipality of Shuniah reported their cottages had been broken into and items stolen. It was also reported several vehicles had been entered and items stolen. Most of the items stolen included televisions and electronic devices. The investigation is continuing
Impaired Driver Arrested and Charged
On Friday September 20 at approximately 11:55 am, officers received a report of a possible impaired driver leaving an establishment and driving on Dawson Road. Shortly thereafter, an officer stopped the driver of a 2002 GMC Sierra on Red River Road.
Upon speaking with the driver, the officer detected an odour of alcohol emitting from the drivers breath. Subsequently, the driver was found to be over three times the legal limit.
John VAN-DYK, 61 years of age, from Thunder Bay was arrested and charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Operate a Motor Vehicle with Over 80 mgs of Alcohol contrary to the Criminal Code.
He is to appear in Criminal Court on October 25 2013 to answer to the charges.
