One Deceased In Owen Sound – Dangerous Drug Identified

The Owen Sound Police Service has received results back on samples sent for analysis.

Inspector Stephen MacKinnon stated, “We have received the results on the analysis of two samples of substances we sent to Health Canada and they came back as being the same drug…Fentanyl.”

The substances were from the two locations on Monday where the police responded to assist paramedics at the scene of suspected overdoses. Three people, a male from the first location and a male and female from the second location, were taken by ambulances to the hospital. Unfortunately the male from the west side location, a 29-year-old from the Meaford area was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other male and female, both in their 20’s and from Owen Sound, survived their ordeal.

“Fentanyl is a powerful opiate that when not taken as prescribed can potentially be lethal, but please let me be clear, we are not saying this is what caused the death of the young man. We must wait for the toxicology results to be returned,” said MacKinnon.

The police are continuing their investigation but have determined that in at least one case the person thought they were ingesting heroin.
