Northumberland Weekend News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of incidents this past weekend, here are some examples:

Jan 27:

The Campbellford Chrysler dealership reported the theft of two Jeep soft tops, and two Jeep windows (side & rear) sometime overnight from the northwest corner of their sales lot. Investigation ongoing.

As a result of an investigation by the Northumberland OPP Street Response Team into scrap metal thefts that occurred in December 2016 and January 2017, a male was arrested and charged with 11 counts of Theft Under $5,000 and 11 counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5,000. Douglas Edward KNIGHT age 37 of Belleville, Ontario was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brighton on March 7, 2017. The thefts occurred both in Northumberland County and Peterborough County.

Officers assisted staff in the emergency department of the Campbellford Memorial Hospital with a violent patient experiencing a mental health crisis. No charges resulted.

Jan 28:

A Brighton hardware store reported the theft of 13 Kidde smoke/carbon monoxide alarms within the last month ranging in price from $74.99 – $144.99. Investigation ongoing.

Police responded to a family dispute in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp where an adult son was threatening to punch a parent. No charges resulted and the son spent the night elsewhere.

Police attended a Brighton home in response to a possible overdose. An occupant of the home was taken to a nearby hospital to receive help with her mental health issues arising from the attempt at self-harm.

Jan 29:

Police received a complaint of living conditions at home in Port Hope where a child lived. Officers consulted with the Children’s Aid Society and together a determination was made that the conditions were suitable and no danger to the child existed.

Officers provided traffic control at the scene of a workshop/fruit stand fire on County Rd 2 in the Grafton area. The road closure lasted approximately 3 hours and the fire was deemed not to be suspicious in nature.

Officer provided advice to a recently separated Brighton couple who were arguing over possession of certain items. Both were advised to seek legal help in drawing up a separation agreement. No charges resulted.

Northumberland OPP officers also investigated seven accidental 911 calls, 12 motor vehicle collisions, 24 traffic related complaints and conducted three RIDE programs over the weekend.
