(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with 239 incidents this past Thanksgiving long weekend, here are some examples:
Oct 7:
Officers assisted a tractor trailer driver who had pulled over on Hwy 401 westbound in Port Hope area to investigate the smell of oil at 2:41am. While at the side of the road the truck caught on fire. Police provided traffic control while Port Hope Fire Department extinguished the fire deemed to be possibly caused by an oil leak. No one was injured and no charges resulted.
A discharged patient from the Campbellford hospital dialed 911 to request a ride home from police because he didn’t want to wake up his friend. Officers advised him to make other arrangements and that this was not a police function.
Report of a ‘scary’ clown walking around Brighton area. Officers were unable to locate the individual who was described as wearing an orange jump suit and a mask with green hair.
Report of a residential break-in on Hillcrest Rd in Port Hope between 10:00am and 3:00pm. The suspect(s) forced open a rear door and stole several firearms from a safe. A partial list of stolen items includes a Cooey .22 bolt action rifle, a Stoeger over-under 12 gauge shotgun, Remington 760 pump action rifle, two laptops, an iPhone and two iPods. Investigation ongoing.
Oct 8:
Police were called at 2:51am by a boat owner docked at Old Mill Park on Trent River in Campbellford for a trespasser who had climbed onto the boat. Officers located the 22yr old local woman who had left when confronted by the boater and charged her with a Liquor offence.
A Brighton resident on Main St reported his outdoor wicker furniture smeared with feces sometime overnight
Report of a residential break-in on 7th Line of Port Hope sometime between Oct. 2nd and today. A 24’ RCA TV with built in DVD player, binoculars in a yellow case and a Fuji camera were stolen. Investigation ongoing
Three domestic disturbances investigated (Colborne, Alnwick-Haldimand & Seymour Twp). No charges resulted in these investigations.
Oct 9:
A 41 yr old Toronto driver was charged with driving while his licence is under suspension after being stopped on Hwy 401 in the Port Hope area
Police were called to a family dispute in Hamilton Twp between adult siblings. The visiting brother had left prior to police arrival. No charges resulted and alcohol was a contributing factor to the escalation of the disturbance.
Report of stolen Ontario licence plates #BMHT891 from a parked car at the commuter lot at Hwy 401 and County Rd 30 in Brighton.
Oct 10:
Report of a residential break-in that occurred sometime between 12noon – 1:00pm at a County Rd 35 home (Woodview and Bannon Rds area) in Trent Hills. The suspect(s) entered through an unlocked rear door and stole a quantity of jewelry and Canadian Tire coupons. Investigation ongoing.
A grey Equinox was stopped for speeding on Oak Ridges Dr in Hamilton Twp, 123km/h in a 80 km/h zone at 1:24pm. The 52 yr old Pickering area female driver was also found to be in possession of 575 unmarked cigarettes. The cigarettes were seized and she was charged accordingly under the Highway Traffic Act and Tobacco Tax Act.
A red Mazda was stopped for speeding on Oak Ridges Dr in Hamilton Twp at 2:40pm. The driver, a 56 yr old Eldon Twp man and his passenger, a 53 yr old Oshawa female were found to be in possession of 1600 unmarked cigarettes. The cigarettes were seized and they were both charged under the Tobacco Tax Act. The driver also faces speeding charges.
The owner of a Samsung NX10 digital camera reported losing it somewhere on County Rd 2 in Hamilton Twp after leaving it on the hood of his car.
Northumberland OPP officers also investigated nine accidental 911 calls, 21 motor vehicle collisions, 67 traffic related complaints and conducted six RIDE programs over the weekend.
