No Brakes Excuse Used For Passing Unloading School Bus

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County detachment is urging all drivers to understand the rules pertaining to passing school buses and the substantial fines for passing with signals flashing.

On Friday, February 24, 2017 at approximately 4:54 p.m., police were contacted by a concerned parent after they observed a vehicle fail to stop for a school bus when the lights and stop arm was activated at a Charlotteville Road 7, Charlotteville, Norfolk County, Ontario address.

Through the course of investigation it was determined that a school bus was stopped with its overhead red signal-lights flashing and stop sign activated. A young child was exiting the bus when a slow moving Chevrolet Pickup truck approached with its four-way flashers activated. The child did not cross the roadway as they seen the vehicle slowly approaching. The truck continued through the stop sign and stopped after the child’s parent began to yell at the driver.

The operator of the truck apologized and indicated that the vehicle did not have any brakes. The male then entered the vehicle and slowly drove away. A few minutes later, a female operating a white coloured Dodge pickup approached and stopped her vehicle. She then apologized and also indicated that the truck did not have any brakes.

Police are looking to speak to the either of these drivers. If anyone has any information or can identify either vehicle or driver they are being asked to contact the Norfolk County OPP detachment at 1-888-310-1122.

Police are reminding all vehicle owners to use some common sense. If any vehicle is having braking issues then that vehicle should not be operated on the roadway where it may possibly put other innocent motorists or bystanders at risk. This incident could of had devastating consequences if that child would have crossed the roadway
