Marine Lesson #1

(Huron County, ON) As boating season is once again upon us, the Huron OPP Marine Unit tends to come across the same violations and issues every year. In an effort to educate the public, we will provide information on various marine topics. To begin with, let’s look at the subject of alcohol on a vessel.

Alcohol maybe carried on any vessel. It may only be consumed, however, on a vessel that has fixed heads (washroom), a fixed kitchen or galley and the vessel MUST be at anchor or at dock.

No alcohol may be consumed, even by passengers, while the vessel is underway. The size of the vessel is irrelevant.

Fixed equipment is defined as an item that is permanently installed and is not an ‘attached’ device. An example of an ‘attached’ device is a port-a-potty which is not acceptable.

Please contact the Huron OPP Marine Unit with any questions you may have.

Happy and safe boating!’
