Man Charged with Theft and Drug Possession

The Chatham-Kent police have arrested a man wanted on an outstanding warrant for theft.

On December 11, 2013 around 5:00 p.m. the man attended a business on St. Clair Street in Chatham. While inside the store, he placed two mag-lights valued at $40.00 into a duffle bag. The man exited the store making no attempts to pay for the merchandise. Through investigation, the man was identified using store security video. Officers attempted to locate the man, however when unsuccessful, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Yesterday afternoon, officers located the man on Thames Street and he was arrested on the outstanding warrant. As the man was searched incident to arrest, he was found to be wearing a stolen coat which still had a security device attached. In total, the man was found to be in possession of three stolen coats with a total value of over $300. The man was also found to be in possession of suspected marijuana.

The 26-year-old Chatham man has been charged with theft under $5000, possession of property obtained by a crime under $5000 x2 and drug possession. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
