Jane VANDERWEL – Drunk Driving, Flight From Police

(GRAFTON, ON) On Saturday August 31, 2013 at approximately 10:30 pm a Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) member was conducting a RIDE spot check when a motor vehicle drove through the spot check ignoring the officer’s indications for it to stop.

The OPP officer was alone on County Road 2 at Brimley Road South with the cruiser emergency lights activated. The officer was also equipped with a fluorescent vest for visibility and the intersection was well light. An eastbound 2010 white Hyundai Santa Fe approached the officer who was indicating with a flashlight and hand signals to stop. The Santa Fe turned south onto Brimley Road and continued on its way, ignoring the officer. The officer followed in his cruiser and eventually stopped the vehicle at a Johnston Court residence.

The officer conducted a brief investigation into the female driver and male passenger and found they were both intoxicated. The female was given a roadside screening device test and subsequently arrested.

Jane VANDERWEL, 53 from Grafton, Ontario has been charged with one count each of operate motor vehicle over 80 milligrams blood alcohol content and flight from police under the Criminal Code. The accused was released on a promise to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on Wednesday September 11, 2013 in Cobourg, Ontario at 9:30 am. She was also issued a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and a vehicle impoundment for seven days.
