(THAMES CENTRE, ON) – The Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid charges against a 36-year-old male following an altercation on the ice at an arena in the 2000 block of Dorchester Road.
Police were contacted at approximately 12:01 p.m. on February 14, 2016, in regard to a player who allegedly struck another player in the head with a hockey stick during a game earlier that day.
The 38-year-old male victim, from London, Ontario, was conveyed to hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries.
The police investigation has revealed that the accused swung his stick at the victim, intentionally, with force, and unrelated to the play.
As a result, Jason ASHTON, from Thames Centre, Ontario, has been charged with assault with a weapon, and assault causing bodily harm, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
The accused was released from police custody by way of a Promise to Appear, and is scheduled to answer the charges in a London court on March 8, 2016.
The Middlesex County OPP reminds players that they must conduct themselves properly and in accordance with their league’s code of conduct policies while playing their sport. If exhibit behaviour meets the threshold of a criminal offence, in addition to respective league disciplinary actions, the player may face charges under the Criminal Code of Canada.
