Wednesday June 10th, the Guelph Police Service hosted the annual School Safety Patrol awards luncheon at the Italian Canadian Club. The luncheon is the GPS’s way of congratulating and showing appreciation to all the patrols for their dedication to the program and ensuring the safety of so many students within our community.
During the year, many students are recognized for their work as a Safety Patrol by receiving the “Most Valuable Patrol” and the “Outstanding Patrol Award.” The GPS was proud to award Ryan Valdock, grade 7, from Westwood School and Tyler Strickland, grade 8, from Waverly Drive School with the prestigious award of “School Safety Patrol of the Year” as they went above and beyond the expectations of a Safety Patrol throughout the year. The GPS also took this time to award Sir Isacc Brock with the title of “School of the Year” for demonstrating exemplary teamwork making them the best safety patrol team in the city. Sir Isacc Brock will have the privilege to proudly display the historic trophy in their school lobby for the next school year. Kathy Soule of Westminster Woods School was also recognized for the Patrol Supervisor of the Year.
In addition to recognizing the student’s hard work and dedication, this year’s luncheon was unique as we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Safety Patrol program in Guelph as well as the successful career of Cst. Karl Zorn. After 33 years of Service, among which 16 years were dedicated to School Safety, officer Zorn, known by many, will be retiring at age 58.
Thank you to our community partners for the continuous support throughout the program. The Guelph Police Service could not host such amazing events for our local youth without your help. Thank you to the Canadian Automobile Association, City of Guelph Traffic Services Department, Student Transportation Services, Champions Choice Trophies, The Guelph Storm Hockey club, Harvey’s, Winmar, Dairy Queen, Swiss Chalet, Domino’s Pizza and Printed to a Tee.
