Grandparent Scammed Out Of $5,000

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is sending a warning to area residents about the “Emergency (Grandparent)” scam after a resident in the Municipality of Kincardine lost $5,000 in the past week. This scam involves a “grandchild” calling their grandparent for help because they’ve been in a car crash, or put in jail, in the Province of Quebec.

The South Bruce OPP is reminding you that modern day scammers have access to a great deal of personal information from the internet. They are very practiced and will seem very convincing with their pleas that you send money right away – without taking the time to verify that they’re really in trouble.

Fraud is a huge enterprise that collects billions of dollars each year from good people that are getting tricked into handing over their hard earned money. The only way to stop the con artists is to stop sending them money; if you receive an urgent call from a “grandchild”, take the time to verify that they’re in trouble before you decide to help. Take the time to protect your hard earned money.

Anyone interested in more information on fraud can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1 888 495 8501 or check online at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca/.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or send a web-tip to crimestop-gb.org, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
