(Tay Township, On)- Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with the Tay Township Fire Service were dispatched to a single car crash at 8:35PM on August 23, 2013.
Emergency services attended the north bound lanes of Highway 400 at the Quarry Road off ramp for a Volkswagen with 2 occupants that had left the roadway and caught fire after striking a rock face. Prior to the arrival of emergency services, several passer-by motorists stopped and pulled the occupants from the fully engulfed vehicle to safety.
The 49 year old male driver from Whitby and the 49 year old female passenger from Barrie were treated at the scene by Simcoe County Paramedic Services and transported to Georgian Bay General Hospital in Midland for treatment. The male driver was later transported to a Toronto area hospital for treatment of his serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The crash continues to be investigated by members of the OPP Central Region Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit as to the cause of the crash.
The passer-by motorists will be recommended for recognition of their acts of selflessness in saving the 2 occupants in the vehicle.
