(CALEDON, ON) – On Saturday August 3, 2013, an officer from the Caledon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was travelling eastbound on Highway 9 at Mountainview Road while conducting mobile radar enforcement.
At approximately 9:20 a.m. the officer observed a blue Volkswagen Jetta travelling westbound on Highway 9 at a high rate of speed. The officer determined that the vehicle was travelling above the posted 80 km/hr. limit. The officer turned his cruiser around and activated the vehicle’s emergency equipment to intercept the motor vehicle. At that time, the officer observed the vehicle make an abrupt left hand turn without signaling and proceeded southbound on Mountainview Road at a high rate of speed cutting off eastbound traffic. The officer further observed the motor vehicle accelerate to a high rate of speed in an attempt to evade police. The motor vehicle was followed southbound on Mountainview Road and the officer recorded the suspect vehicle’s speed at 162 km/hr. in a posted 70 km/hr. zone. The suspect vehicle continued southbound, then made an abrupt turn in a residential driveway. The officer entered the driveway and approached the male driver.
In conclusion, Geremia STEFANO, 52, of Toronto was arrested and charged with Flight from Police, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and several Highway Traffic Act offences including Race a Motor Vehicle, Driving While under Suspension and Fail to Stop for Police.
The vehicle was impounded for seven days.
The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville on September 5, 2013.
