Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision – Pick-up Truck Submerged In Saugeen River

(TOWNSHIP OF SOUTHGATE, ON) On Friday, September 6, 2013 at approximately 6:56 a.m., Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a pick-up truck in the water off of Southgate Rd. 10 in the Township of Southgate. A person was observed in the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Police arrived and observed a pick-up truck submerged in the Saugeen River, south of Southgate Rd. 10, just east of Southgate Side Road 7.

The OPP Underwater Search and Rescue Unit attended and removed the lone, female, occupant from the vehicle. She was deceased.

Investigation revealed that the vehicle, 2007 GMC pick-up truck was travelling westbound on Southgate Rd. 10 when it left the roadway. The vehicle proceeded down the embankment on the south side of the road and entered the water (Saugeen River). The cause and the time of the collision are not known at this time.

The OPP West Region Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit is assisting with the investigation.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending confirmation of her identification and next of kin notification.

A number of emergency responders assisted, including, Wellington County EMS, Grey County EMS, Mount Forest, Hanover and West Grey Fire Departments.
