Fatal Collision Update – Deceased Identified

(COUNTY OF BRANT, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) County of Brant Detachment investigated a fatal motor vehicle collision on Newport Road in the County of Brant.

On Friday, August 5, 2016 at approximately 1:07 a.m., officers were on patrol when they observed half of a motor vehicle on the side of the road.

Through the course of investigation, it has been determined that a maroon coloured 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix was travelling southbound on Newport Road when the driver failed to negotiate the turn in the roadway. The vehicle subsequently left the road and entered the east ditch and collided with a tree.

As a result of the collision, the front and rear of the vehicle separated, with the front portion coming to rest in a field. The male driver of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene by the attending coroner.

The male driver has been identified as 26-year-old Barry VANEVERY of Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation.

OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators are continuing the investigation.

Newport Road has been re-opened between Old Greenfield Road and Sour Springs Road.
