East Algoma Blind River Report

(BLIND RIVER, ON) – On July 5, 2018, shortly before 1:00 a.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a domestic disturbance that had occurred approximately an hour prior and a male had left a residence in the Town of Blind River.

A 21 year female and a male had a verbal argument where it ensued to where the male pushed the female and threatening to harm her with an edged weapon. Further investigation determined that the female had been physically assaulted on June 27th, 28th, and 30th, 2018. The male was located at a local coffee shop and arrested.

As a result of the investigation, a 19 year old male was charged with:

Assault-Spousal (X4), contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC): and with

Uttering Threats-Cause Death or Bodily Harm-Spousal, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on August 30, 2018.

MALE LAYING ON THE SIDE OF HIGHWAY ARRESTED

(TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE)- On July 6, 2018, shortly after 9:00 p.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded for a call for service where a male was laying on the shoulder of Highway 17 in the Township of the North Shore.

A vehicle had stopped and the occupants of the vehicle had rendered assistance to the male. They had called for ambulance and a passing Anishinabek Police Service (APS) officer had stopped to assist.

OPP officers and Algoma Paramedic Services arrived a short time later and paramedics provided care for the male. While speaking to the male, officers detected a strong odour of alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath and observed him to have a slurred speech.

As a result of the investigation, Thomas SEARSON, 29 years of age from Sudbury, Ontario, was charged with: Being Intoxicated in Public Place, contrary to section 31(4) of the Liquor Licence Act.

The male was arrested and transported to Blind River Detachment where he was lodged overnight until sober.

FEMALE CHARGED AFTER ASSAULTING HER EX AND HIS DATE

(SPANISH, ON)- On July 8, 2018, shortly before 9:00 p.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a domestic dispute where a female had called police on herself and advised police that she had just assaulted her ex-spouse in the Town of Spanish.

Investigation determined that the female attended the Spanish Marina where she began to yell and scream at her ex. She then confronted and physically assaulted her ex-spouse and his date on the Marina boardwalk. Prior to the assaults she had taken the keys from her ex-spouse’s pick up and locked the doors. The ex-spouse and his date left the area and attended a residence on Hamilton Street. A short time later the female pulled into the driveway in the ex-spouse’s pick-up at that residence, jumped out of the pick-up and began to physically assault him and his date once more.

As a result of the investigation, a 29 year old female from Spanish, Ontario was charged with:

Assault-Spousal (X2), contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC);

Assault, contrary to section 266 of the CC;

Theft of a Motor Vehicle, contrary to section 333.1 of the CC; and with

Fail to Comply with Conditions of Undertaking, contrary to section 145(5.1) of the CC.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail Court in Blind River on July 9, 2018.

MALE CHARGED WHILE DRIVING SUSPENDED

(BLIND RIVER, ON)- On July 10, 2018, members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol duties on Causley Street in the Town of Blind River.

Shortly after 5:00 p.m., police observed a vehicle on Causley Street and queried the licence plate and revealed the registered owner to be a suspended driver. A traffic stop was initiated and the driver was requested to surrender his driver’s licence which was suspended.

As a result of the investigation, Christian VARGA, 21 years of age, from Elliot Lake, Ontario was charged with: Driving While Under Suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on August 15, 2018.

TRAFFIC COMPLAINT – DRIVER CHARGED

(BLIND RIVER, ON)- On July 11, 2018, shortly after 5:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint on Highway 17 heading westbound from Nairn Centre, Ontario. The suspect vehicle was speeding and passing unsafely on corners.

At 6:38 p.m., a vehicle matching the description was located on Causley Street in the Town of Blind River and a traffic stop was initiated. The male driver could not produce a driver’s licence and the vehicle he was driving did not have a validation sticker on his plate.

As a result of the investigation, Rafik DAKO, 25 years of age from York, Ontario was issued two provincial offence notices and charged with:

Drive Motor Vehicle, No Currently Validated Permit, contrary to section 7(1)(a) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA); and with

Driver Fail to Surrender Licence, contrary to section 33(1) of the HTA.
