(WHITNEY, ON) – On November 11, 2014 at approximately 8:30pm, an aircraft contacted the Toronto Area Control Centre and advised they had an airborne emergency. Shortly after, communication was lost.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) was notified and launched a CH-146 Griffin Helicopter and a CC-130 Hercules Aircraft, both from 424 Squadron, 8 Wing Trenton.
The Hercules located a distress beacon from the missing aircraft. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were notified to assist in the search. ‎The Griffin hoisted Search and Rescue Technicians down to the scene. OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) members and uniform officers attended the scene, approximately 20 kms south/west of Whitney, ON in a dense bush/treed area within Algonquin Park. At approximately 4:40am the crash site was located and the male pilot and his passenger were located deceased.
‎The cause of the crash and the deaths of the two adult men are under investigation with the assistance of the Transportation Safety Board. Their identities will not be released pending confirmation through a post mortem examination that will be scheduled, followed by notification of next- of- kin.
