(OTTAWA, ON) – The Provincial Distracted Driving Campaign was launched on March 14th, 2015 and ended on March 20th, 2015. The Ottawa Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) issued 65 Provincial Offence Notices related to distracted driving during the campaign. These numbers contributed to the overall total of 462 Provincial Offence Notices issued across eastern Ontario.
The breakdown of the Ottawa OPP charges is as follows:
2 Charges – Display screen visible to driver contrary to the Highway Traffic Act;
62 Charges – Hand-held communication Device contrary to the Highway Traffic Act;
1 Charge – Careless driving; and
Incidents of interest during the Distracted Driving Campaign –
An officer observed a vehicle weaving all over the road while driving westbound on Highway 417 near the Moodie Drive overpass. The officer observed the driver reading a muti-page document that was being held on the steering wheel. The driver was subsequently charged with Careless Driving.
An officer was investigating a motor vehicle collision on Highway 417 eastbound near the Carling Aveune offramp, was almost stuck by a passing motorist who was texting. The officer was standing outside his cruiser with the emergency lights activated at the time. The driver was subsequently charged with Drive-Hand-held communication Device.
