Deer Vs 71 Year Old Driver – One Sent To Hospital

(HALIBURTON, ON) – On Saturday October 17, 2015 just before 6:30pm officers from the Haliburton Highlands Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 35 near Henderson Road in Minden Hills Township.

OPP officers attended the scene along with Haliburton County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Minden Hills Fire Department.

A 2014 Subaru was northbound on Highway 35 when the driver struck a deer and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a rock cut. The sole occupant, a 71 year old male from Minden was extricated from the vehicle and airlifted to a Toronto area hospital with serious injuries.

Members of the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigations unit (TTCI) are in attendance at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing and the roadway is closed. At this time traffic is being re-routed at Henderson Road.

The Haliburton Highlands OPP would like to remind motorists that with the increase in deer movement during the fall months, drivers need to be more alert. Knowing how deer move during this time of year could be essential in avoiding a collision.
