(CRAMAHE TOWNSHIP, ON) At approximately 11:42 am on Monday July 29, 2013 Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call regarding an injured cyclist on County Road 2 in Cramahe Township east of Colborne, Ontario.
OPP were advised that a group of approximately 350 cyclists were travelling from Port Hope to Ameliasburg as one part of PWA (People with AIDS) Friends for Life bike rally, which is a six day charity ride from Toronto to Montreal.
Two riders were between Hunt Road and Fiddick Road in Cramahe Township when the front rider heard a “pop†and found her friend behind her on the road.
Brighton Fire Department (BFD) and Northumberland Emergency Medical Services (EMS) attended prior to police arriving and transported the injured male to a local hospital with serious life altering injuries. An OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation (TTCI) Unit member attended to assist with the investigation.
OPP investigation determined that a bicycle malfunction may have caused the 55 year old male from Mannheim, Ontario to strike a nearby parked vehicle after the malfunction and resulted in the serious injuries sustained.
